Garage Theater among the eleven finalists of the Ellen Stewart International Award
Garage Theater has been nominated for the Ellen Stewart International Award. This Award is given to an individual theatre artist or theatre company whose work promotes social change and community participation with a particular focus on the engagement of young people.
Ellen Stewart, the founder of La MaMa, has devoted her life to theatrical activities. La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club (E.T.C.), founded in 1961, is one of the most successful Off-Off-Broadway theatrical companies.
Ellen Stewart had an incredible work ethic, dedication and her influence in the theatre was simply groundbreaking.
She created a space to foster young artists including but not limited to Sam Shepard, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Bette Midler.
Garage Theater has been nominated for this award as a result of their activities for more than a decade in the field of laboratory theater, developing the techniques in acting and performance, fostering and supporting the youth, and nomadic theatrical work.
Garage Theater hopes that with the support of the independent theater community the theater and performance of Iran reaches full international potential.
